We are deeply saddened by the loss of our organization's founder, Calista Smith.

A link to her obituary can be found HERE

Calista was distinctive in many ways: a big personality with lots of ideas and lots of energy. I’ve always maintained that she was a visionary in making the move to secure the Conservatory building, with all its beauty and all its problems, and to imagine—with some audacity—an educational arts center in our small town. Offering a range of individual music lessons; dance and arts instruction; and quality performances and presentations of the results, that center has had a reach well beyond the borders of Trumansburg.

I am happy that I was able to serve as one who had actually known Calista. I only had reason for occasional contact with her while I worked at TCFA, but she helped me resolve some issues, and it was important to me that cognizance of her style and her determination were part of what kept me motivated during my time with TCFA. I will always remember her supportive endorsement of my efforts and the warmth of her friendship, and be thankful for the important organization she established in Trumansburg.

— S.K. List, former director TCFA

Calista had a deep devotion to the concept of creating an institution for education and presentation of the arts and built TCFA with the highest of principles. Her inspired decision to save the church which is its home provides for her lasting legacy in Trumansburg and beyond. I met numerous parents and students who were positively affected by Calista's teaching. Many parents brought their children to the Conservatory to learn because of their positive experience with Calista in those early days.

Each time I walked into the director's office and saw the brass plaque on the door with her name on it, I took a moment to acknowledge the debt of gratitude that we owe to Calista for her vision.

— Mark Costa, former Director TCFA

Calista was a remarkable woman. The tenacity she demonstrated from a young age through her work at the Conservatory is inspiring. I am grateful for her vision and endurance. Her legacy will be cherished and long remembered.

— Dona Roman, Director TCFA

As a long-time resident of the area it is hard to imagine Trumansburg without the Conservatory of Fine Arts. It is our "jewel in the crown" not only for its prominent presence overlooking the village but also for the way it has enriched so many lives. We are forever in debt to Calista for her vision and perseverance.
